Fishing for data:
Collaborative ocean data where it is needed most.

Connecting and benefiting fisheries, science and maritime industries.

DATA AS A SERVICE

We provide data collection as a service, where no one else can. Through evaluating data gaps, instrumenting fishing vessels to fill those gaps, and delivering data automatically in real-time we improve your ocean model and operational forecasts.

Data management network & Platform

Interested in fishing for data yourself? We are here to help you join the emerging global community of science and industry lead programs collecting ocean data with fishers. Together we are stronger: centralized and FAIR data flows are key to increasing value and impact for all stakeholders.

HOW?

Integration of sensors with fishing operations is the best mechanism for filling some of the most pressing data gaps in sustained operational ocean monitoring. Fishing vessels operate in shelf regions exactly where autonomous platforms struggle because of complex bathymetry and strong currents. These regions are the most dynamic ocean regions in the world with the highest ecosystem productivity, biodiversity, and value to maritime industries and coastal recreation.

We enable cost-effective collection of ocean data precisely in these under-monitored shelf regions, by equipping fishing gear with sensors. Profiles of temperature, salinity, and other essential ocean variables are measured, sent to the vessel, and then onto users in real time. Additional sensors can collect sea-surface and meteorological parameters for a full suite of co-located met-ocean data streams.

OUR DATA SUPPORTS

FISHING
INDUSTRY

A win-win for fishing: catch more of your target species while avoiding by-catch by understanding the ocean conditions preferred by different species.

OCEANOGRAPHY &
FORECASTING

High quality profile data from the most dynamic regions in your model domain. Increase the value of sparse existing observations.

CLIMATE CHANGE
MONITORING

Oceans have absorbed more than 90% of global warming, yet we are barely taking its temperature. Our data is particularly impactful in marginal sea ice polar regions.

FISHERIES
SCIENCE

Existing modeled ocean data is not adequately accurate for the ecosystem-based science and management of the future, especially in shelf and coastal seas.

IMPACT

“Oh, I see a ball of bait at a certain depth and then go back and look at the graphs and look at what the temperature was at that depth. Then I’ll target that depth of water and keep an eye on the temp in that region”

Stakeholder driven science

Engaging fishers in ocean observation empowers them to contribute to improved fishery management. The exchange of knowledge between scientists and fishers can open the door for improved dialogues and collaboration between industry stakeholders and the research community

The blue data
revolution

A severe lack of ocean data has prevented the blue economy from experiencing the big data revolution. Fishing for data can enable digital twins of the ocean allowing for researchers to build a better understanding of the impacts a changing climate has on the ocean and create plans to adapt to these changes. Understanding and predicting changes in our oceans is economically and culturally important, especially in shelf and coastal regions where the majority of maritime activities are concentrated.

Democratizing Ocean Observation

Sustained ocean observation is prohibitively expensive for many nations. Collaboration and integration enables cost-effective ocean observation capacity development in many regions where it was previously inaccessible.
